What Is Asphalt Grinding?

Asphalt grinding is a cost-effective method for repairing and rejuvenating existing asphalt surfaces. This process involves removing the top layer of the asphalt using specially designed equipment, like a cold planer, and then recycling the removed material, called grindings, which can be used in new paving applications. This process also preserves the sub-base of the asphalt surface, allowing for new asphalt to be installed on top.

The asphalt grinding process starts with the cold planer, which slowly moves down the street, parking lot, or driveway, scraping up the top layer of the asphalt using a drumhead covered with spikes. The material is then transported through a series of conveyor belts to waiting trucks. The reclaimed asphalt is then taken back to the manufacturing plant, where it is recycled and mixed with new paving to create a smooth new finish.

An Environmentally-Minded Paving Solution

Apart from being cost-effective, asphalt grinding also has several other benefits. For example, it is an environmentally friendly process that uses recycled materials, which means fewer new resources are needed to create the fresh asphalt layer.

Another benefit of asphalt grinding is that it improves pavement smoothness, which results in more comfortable and safer driving conditions. Smoother pavement surfaces also reduce vehicle wear and tear and fuel consumption. Additionally, asphalt grinding can improve surface drainage, reducing the risk of standing water, which can cause damage to the pavement and increase safety hazards.

When to Choose Asphalt Grinding

If you’re experiencing issues with your roadways, parking lots, or driveways, asphalt grinding may be the solution you need to restore them to their former glory. Asphalt grinding is effective at fixing surface flaws caused by a variety of factors, including age, weather, and heavy traffic. Perhaps you’re dealing with cracked pavement that needs to be repaired to halt further deterioration. Asphalt grinding can be used to remove the damaged surface and create a fresh, new layer of pavement.

Pavement raveling can also be remedied through asphalt grinding. Raveling occurs when an asphalt surface begins to disintegrate, causing the aggregate materials to become dislodged, resulting in a rough texture that can damage vehicles and become hazardous for pedestrians. Asphalt grinding removes the damaged surface, repurposing the old asphalt to create new aggregate material for repaving. This process not only provides a fresh and smooth surface but also improves the overall safety and functionality of the pavement.
